A Dagara anthropomorphic ancestral figure
This type of abstract figure was commissioned to protect the village and clan from various issues. In Burkina Faso and other West African countries, a diviner was consulted whenever turmoil erupted and a problem was persistent. Inverted Y-shaped, wooden sculptures, such as this figure, were created by a carver as a diagnostic aid. They are classic examples of the extreme stylization of the human figure as found among the Dagara people, and related Lobi people of Burkina Faso. They are connected with patriarchal figures-male ancestors (i.e. fathers, grandfathers, great grandfathers). Groups of these wooden figures were kept in outdoor shrine compounds and ritually 'fed,' that is, covered with sacrificial libations such as mixtures of chicken blood, feathers, eggshells, and millet grain. The encrusted surface of this figure shows ample remains of such offerings. It is difficult to imagine this sculpture could have been created by an amateur carver. It is deceptively simple and dynamic. It shows a remarkable grasp of attitude, power, and expression which only an experienced sculptor could produce. Standing 35.50" H x 16" W, the superb sculpture is an exercise in the discipline of minimalism. 20th century. Excellent condition.
