The expressive and dynamic wooden dance headdress showing opposing, stylized heads with long, horn-like projections (probably hair braids), linear scarification, and scoop-shaped faces. Such multi-faced or janus-faced headdresses represented the lead flute played during various celebratory and funereal masquerades. Very fine, aged patina with old losses to the very tips of the 'horns' and the base form; old stable 'check' in the wood on one side. Traces of organic (chalk-derived) white, and of raw indigo pigment. From the Idoma people, Nigeria, early 20th century. 19.50"H. Mounted on a wood base. Provenance: Peter Boyd, WA, ca. 1980's.
