Circa 1840 Chinese Export Rose Medallion Syllabub Cup with Cover. This is a Great Rarity and we are posting three of these syllabubs with their original cover on our web site-www.mimisantiques.com. In the Book "CHINESE EXPORT PORCELAIN" By Herbert Schiffer and published by Peter and Nancy Schiffer, "Schiffer Publishing Ltd." On Page 131 Example #360, is listed. Herbert Schiffer writes, "Rose Medallion is prodigal in the enormous variety of shapes, but in twenty years of business and even longer museum viewing, we have only seen this one example". I do not recall in my years of collecting rose medallion I have ever seen one either. I have had them in blue canton and many 18th century pieces..
Recently we acquired a large collection of rose medallion in Philadelphia and there were three of these in that collection. We will be listing all three and offering them for sale. It is not known why this should be so rare. Rose Medallion is prodigal in the enormous variety of shapes, but in my 20 years of collecting, this and the other two are the only examples I have ever seen. This one measures 3 1/2" to the top of the gilded finial. With the cover off the height to the top of the rim is 2 1/4" and is 2 3/4" in diameter. It has double strapped handles and a beautiful gilded finial.
