A stunning antique bracelet with six different circular shakudo panels mounted in gold. Late 19th century, aesthetic influence. Shakudo is a black alloy
made of copper with a small amount of gold. It was originally used for Japanese sword fittings. The wearing of swords was banned in Japan in 1876, and
the metalsmiths who were skilled in decorating Samurai swords turned to making jewelry for export to the West. The shakudo panels have gold and
silver overlay accents. The mountings, clasp and safety chain all test positive for 14KT gold with jeweler's acid. Substantial at 60 grams. Each scene is
different. 7 inches long and 15/16 inch wide. Each shakudo panel and its setting is 15/16 inch in diameter. Excellent condition. Photos enlarged to show detail. |
