Offered is a Louis Mideke (1908-1989 Washington) Black Splash Glazed Stoneware Bottle Vase from the 1960’s. The wheel thrown vase with abstract splash glazes is 8'' x 6.5'' and marked with Mideke’s incised signature on the base (and a label from the Redbug Gallery in Berkeley) as shown. The piece is in excellent vintage condition without chips, cracks or repairs. Mideke (1908-1989) was a northwest regional American functional potter from Bellingham, Washington. His work is distinctive, utilitarian, and elegant. Mideke was a self-educated potter who gathered his inspiration from books and museums. Like many other northwest regional potters his work was grounded in a tradition that was predominantly Asian. First introduced to clay when his wife brought some home from a ceramics course she was taking, by 1950 Mideke had become a full-time potter producing mostly functional items. His early works were done in a local red clay; although he later expanded to stoneware and porcelain. Early in his career, Mideke entered pieces in national shows and won some honors, but stopped. He felt pottery should be useful, beautiful to see and touch, and accessible to all.
