Set of Four Iconic Mid Century Modern Cherner Chairs
Available is a matched set of four Cherner chairs designed for Plycraft by Norman Cherner in 1958. The set consists of one arm chair and three side chairs all in very good vintage condition with their original Gold vinyl upholstery. The arm chair and one side chair still retain their original Plycraft labels which read Designed by Bernado but they are truly designed by Norman Cherner. The following is an excerpt from an article in Modernism Magazine and it explains the label confusion. It was created in 1958 by the American designer, Norman Cherner. Commissioned by Paul Goldman, the previous year, Goldman's company, Plycraft, had been engaged to make George Nelson's loop-backed Pretzel Chair for Herman Miller. Sadly, this charming- but-costly chair was discontinued and Goldman was left holding the expensive tooling. On Nelson's recommendation, Cherner was asked to design a similar chair using the same machinery.Cherner signed a contract and delivered his designs, only to be told that the project was off. A few months later, he was dismayed to discover his chair for sale in New York. According to the label it was made by Plycraft and designed Bernado. In 1961 Cherner took Plycraft to court, where Goldman admitted his deception Bernado was apparently a figment of his publicity team's imagination. Still, designer royalty battles not being big news, few people noticed and for years Goldman himself (who died this year) was spuriously credited with the chair's design. " So any chairs that were made prior to 1961 were labeled with the ficticious Designed by Bernado and any chairs made after Cherner won his suit carry his name. Condition: The arm chair has two small areas of veneer loss to the top of the back and one side chair has a small tear in the vinyl at the edge of the seat as shown in photos. Neither is visible unless you know to look for them. The other two side chairs have no issues other than normal wear for being 50 years old.
