Large Japanese Oribe Pottery Vase by Fujiwara Kyosuke
Sold, Thank you!

Here a large Oribe Tsubo by Fujiwara Kyosuke enclosed in the original wooden box and published on page 34 of his 30th Anniversary Retrospective catalog (1993, included with the sale). Glassy green glaze hangs suspended over pale Oribe beige, seemingly caught in the triplet of grooves dragged through the pale clay. An attractive shape without pretense; it is 10 inches (25 cm) tall, 11 inches (28 cm) wide and in perfect condition. Born the second son of Living National Treasure Fujiwara Kei in 1939, Kyosuke studied oil painting in Tokyo before moving to Tajimi City in Gifu to study at the Ceramic research institute there, establishing himself in the Mino tradition. He received the Kaneshige Toyo prize in 1979, and has been successively prized at the influential Tanabe Museum Cha-no-Yu Zokei Ten among many others.
