Silver gleams among the Tenmoku spots of this fine ceramic charger by Sasaki Yuzuru enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The piece is 18-1/2 inches (47 cm) diameter, 1-3/4 inches (4.5 cm) tall and in perfect condition.
Yuzuru (b. 1949) has been dazzling Japan with his unique Tenmoku wares for more than a quarter century. He was born in Okayama, and apprenticed under Kimura Morikazu (a god of Tenmoku himself) for 8 years while attending the Kyoto Ceramic Research Institute, establishing his own kiln in Fukui in 1979. He has been often displayed at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibiiton). His mentor Morikazu said of him, “Of all my students he most understood the magic of Tetsuyu Tenmoku”. Since 1996 he has had more than 30 private exhibtions with Takashimaya, one of Japan’s premier Department Stores.
