Contemporary Ceramic Sculpture by Doi Benie
A large ceramic sculpture of a robed figure by Doi Benie enclosed in the original signed wooden box. Over the shoulders of the limestone-like freckled glaze is a cloud of gold flake, drawing our attention to the bundled arms in front. It is mounted on a wooden base with a plaque reading Benie, and enclosed in a wooden box titled No-waki (A powerful wind). The sculpture is 19 inches (47.5 cm) tall plus the base and is in fine condition.
Benie (b. 1935) is a modern artist: painter, ceramicist and sculptor working in a variety of mediums. Immediately after graduating the Tokyo University of Art Japanese Style Painting (Nihonga) Department in 1960, the artist was accepted into the Inten National Exhibition, as well as winning a prize at the Japan Ceramics Design Exhibition, setting the stage for an illustrious career. From 1962 she began in depth study of ceramics, and then was exhibited at the Asahi Doll Exhibition and 7th Modern Female Doll Exhibition in 1965, also taking the Yomiuri Newspaper Art Prize that year, and the Governors prize at the Chiba Prefectural Exhibition the next year. From then the list is extensive and her work has been much lauded and prized, and is held in the Chiba Prefectural Museum among others.
