A round thatched hut with removable roof forms this delightful koro incense burner from Matsuura Mugen enclosed in the original signed wooden box. It is 4-1/4 inches (11 cm) tall, 4 inches (10 cm) diameter ad in fine condition.
Matsuura Mugen was born in Hagi in 1944, and apprenticed under the 13th generation Miwa Kyusetsu in 1974, establishing his own kiln in 1979. In 1982 he set aside a year for study of traditional pottery throughout Japan, visiting Iga, Shigaraki, Shino and Bizen. The following year he built a half submerged kiln to further his development of traditional Korai Korean firing techniques. He has always worked in the private world of the potter and connoisseur, relying strictly on word of mouth and private exhibitions.
