Faceted Bizen Pottery Tsubo by Okada Teru
A large Ruiza O-tsubo by Okada Teru (b. 1947) enclosed in the original signed wooden box purchased at a 2001 exhibition at the Osaka Takashimaya department Store. The entire surface has been cut with swirling facets, rising from red flame to charred dark earth. The tsubo is 16-1/2 inches (42 cm) tall, 13 inches (33 cm) diameter and in excellent condition. It retains the original exhibition guide and price card (500,000 yen, roughly 4,100 dollars). Born in Maidzuru, Kyoto prefecture, Teru apprenticed under Living National Treasure Fujiwara Yu. He has exhibited at the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition) since 1975, and was awarded at the Okayama KenTen (prefectural Exhibition) 14 times. He has also been awarded at the Chanoyu Zokei-Ten (Modern Sculptural Tea Forms Exhibition at the Tanabe Museum) and received the coveted Kaneshige Toyo prize.
