A primitive design with raw, gutsy texture, getting back to basics with this Bizen tsubo by Mori Yasushi (b. 1947) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The reddish clay grows steadily darker toward the top, frosted with a thin coat of pale green ash. The piece is sizeable, 10-1/2 inches (27 cm) diameter, the same height and in excellent condition. Born to the house of Bizen potter Mori Gyokusan, Yasushi has a list of exhibitions and prizes too long to go through, but includes the national Nihon Togei Ten (Japan Ceramics Exhibition), Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (Japanese Traditional Crafts Exhibition). Asahi Togei Ten and Chunichi Kokusai Togei Ten. He was recipient of the coveted Kaneshige Toyo prize in 2005. This piece dates circa 1985.
