Large vase by LNT Shimaoka Tatsuzo

A large urn shaped vessel by Shimaoka Tatsuzo enclosed in the original signed and stamped wooden box. The artists famous Jomon rope impressions are visible in filled slip about the center. A beautifully potted piece in deep iron color, the vase is 10 inches tall, 7-1/2 inches diameter an in perfect condition. After serving in World War II, Tatsuzo apprenticed under world famous Mashiko Mingei potter Hamada Shoji, establishing his own kiln in 1954. Working with rope patterns, Tatsuzo set out to create a style unique to himself, resulting in the piece you see here, which is quintessential Tatsuzo. In 1996 he was designated a Living National Treasure (Juyo Mukei Bunkazai or Ningenkokuho).
