| A very personal work by celebrated porcelain master Kato Iwao (1930-1987) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. A peony (botan) has been engraved in the side, blue leaves on pale blue porcelain forming a crisp, yet soft atmosphere, like morning snow. The vase is 7-1/2 inches (19 cm) tall, 6 inches (15 cm) diameter. Iwao was born in 1930, son of a Kyoto potter and studied under his father and later under Kusube Yaichi until 1953, the year he was first accepted into the prestigious National Nitten Exhibition. His list of awards is most impressive, Asahi Togei-ten, Gendai Kogei-ten, Nihon Togei-ten, Mainichi Togei-ten. His works were on several occasions purchased as gifts to foreign dignitaries and he is one of the few deceased artists remembered in the Gendai Togei Sakka Jitten (Dictionary of Modern Ceramic Artists, publ. 1998) | ||||||||||||
