|A trumpeting form vase by celadon master Suwa Sozan III (1932-2005) enclosed in the original signed wooden box. This vase is a break from the more traditional works often associated with this artist in the west, and shows very well the more contemporary side for which he is known domestically. Three paddle marks gyrate around a dark bead, providing depth to the engraved vortex swirling on the side. The vase is 9-1/2 inches (24 cm) diameter, 8 inches (20 cm) tall and in excellent condition. Sozan was born in Kyoto, and studied initially under Living National Treasures Tomimoto Kenkichi and Kondo Yuzo. He received the name Suwa Sozan III in 1970, and has lived up to its prestigious following with a variety of works bringing prizes and exhibitions both International and domestic. These include the Kofukai Prize, The Nitten, and the Kyoten Governors Prize among many others.|
