Various designs rise from the surface of this bulb shaped vase by Kawai Toru decorated in the dore-e style of slip design. Gosu blue outside with tinges of rusty iron, accentuated inside with iron red. The vase is 9 inches (22.5 cm) tall, roughly the same diameter and in perfect condition. There is no box. Toru was born in 1941, the son of Kawai Takeichi. He apprenticed jointly under his father and Grandfather in 1964, making him the last disciple of Kanjiro Kawai, and it is he who seems to have lived up to his mentors expectations, synthesizing the Kawai style and taking it to the next level. This is part of a collection of Kawai works we have recently acquired. For more on this artist and the Kawai Family see the book Mingei, Continuity and Innovation Through Three Generations of Modern Potters produced by the International Mingei Museum of San Diego.
