Thick green goma is splattered over the sculpted surface of this large contemporary vase by Konishi Tozo enclosed in the original signed wooden box. The vase is roughly 9-1/2 by 6-1/2 by 8 inches (24 x 16.5 x 20 cm) and is in fine condition. This piece was sold at the Nipponbashi Mitsukoshi Department Store Exhibition in 1997 and comes with the original exhibition pamphlet. Konishi Tozo was born the son of Bizen artist Konishi Toko. He graduated the Nippon Daigaku Universtiy in 1970 and was accepted the following year into the Nihon Dento Kogei Ten (National Traditional Crafts Exhibition). In 1972 he expanded his repertoire in the Chunichi Kokusai Togei Ten, as well as the 2nd Nihon Togei-ten (National Ceramics Exhibiton). That same year he received his first of many prizes at the Okayama Prefectural Exhibition. He was granted the Kaneshige Toyo Prize in 1988, ingraining him into the annals of modern Bizen Ceramics forever.
