Important and beautiful Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) satin glass footed basket with a unique and unusual handle in the rare HERRINGBONE VARIANT pattern (rarely seen discontinuous pattern). This type of basket is sometimes referred as a bride's wedding basket which was given to a bride during the Victorian era with goodies in it. Maker: Mt. Washington Glass, USA. Year: 1880's Measurements: 10 inches high, 7 1/2 inches in diameter In order to create MOP glass, molten glass is blown into a mold with the pattern defined by projections (the Herringbone Variant pattern is rarely ever seen). This glass is then cased - thus trapping the air internally and creating a lasting and attractive pattern. The interior glass is yellow with a gorgeous pink on the exterior. Clear glass is crimped on the ruffled edge. The four (4) thorn-shaped (drip) frosted glass feet are applied to the base. The handle is also frosted glass applied to each end of the basket to cross over each other toward the top of the handle. Condition: Excellent (for accuracy purposes and very very close inspection, there are a a couple mini fleabites on bottom of interior of the bowl, and what appears to be a break/hairline at the very top of the handle and may have been repaired - the glass line is at the same junction as the other perfect handle only noticeable upon discrete inspection) ..... a truly beautiful Victorian art glass |
