| This wonderfully detailed Navajo pictorial weaving dimensions 21 ½ inches by 28 inches which makes it perfect for a wall hanging was purchased about five years ago in Gallup, New Mexico. When purchased, the tag read E. Benally, a common Navajo name, and the dealers specialized in direct dealings with Navajo families. This was a long-standing trading family, not a new import company. They said she was one of their best weavers and her pieces sold as quickly as they got them in, which wasn't often, and I felt great about the purchase. Unfortunately, I don't recall her first name. Because the piece no longer fits with my decor, it's time for someone else to enjoy it. The weaving is very tight, and features a common day scene including contemporary round pen, Hogan (traditional Navajo house which is round in shape), Mesa, red pick-up truck, old black car, and two Navajo women in their traditional skirts and Navajo man in his traditional black hat, sheep, and scenery of red hills. The women appear to have white fat legs but that actually represents their white leather moccasins wraps, still worn in Navajo country by older Navajo women, to protect their legs from thick brush when they are out in the fields. I had a Navajo weaver friend, unfortunately now deceased, and she inspected this when I first brought it home. She said it was excellent work and then smiled because she noted the weaver had included a few black hair strands into the weaving, which she said was "an old timer's tradition" and something she herself did as a way to put "herself" into the piece. There's no way to show the strands in the photos, but if you are the lucky winner, search for them. There are only a very few. This is an excellent pictorial from the Window Rock region, heart of Navajo country, and full retail on it would be about $650. The pictures do not reflect the actual item size. See description of measurements. Size of this beautiful weaving is 21 ½ inches by 28 inches. | ||
