| The white marble is an advantage here, making Hayes Leekya's signature on the horse's belly more noticeable and legible. An August, 2004 article in New Mexico Magazine's annual "Native American" issue, featured Hayes making horses with inlaid turquoise hooves, very similar to this one, and he comments that of all the animals he carves, "Horses are my favorites." He also says it takes him about four hours to carve a horse. The article also mentions that before gathering stone for carving -- Hayes uses a lot of travertine, or "Zuni stone" found plentifully around Zuni pueblo (SEE MY OTHER HAYES LEEKYA HORSE LISTING STOCK# 428, AS IT IS MADE OF TRAVERTINE), he offers food and blessing to have a good day finding rocks. The Leekya family is a large and well-known fetish carving family. Hayes is the grandson of famous carver Leekya Deyuse -- any Google search will turn up historical information on his importance and his work found in collections and museums. This sweet white horse is smaller than the travertine one I'm offering. Given the history behind the horse's carver, he would be a terrific addition to any collection. Dimensions: Fetish is 2 inch long and 1 7/8 inch tall. | ||
