| Paul Landacre, American, 1893-1963, "Black Stallion," wood engraving, image size 6 x 7 inches, 1940, edition of 200, printed on very fine cream colored Japan paper, pencil signed and titled. This wood engraving comes in the original presentation folder from The Woodcut Society, which includes an introduction by Carl Zigrosser. Paul Landacre was one of the great American masters of wood engraving, and this is one of his finest works. In his introduction, Zigrosser writes that in this image, "Mr. Landacre represents in symbolic fashion some of the elemental forces of nature- the exulting strength of the stallion and the glory of woman....This picture, with its dynamic composition and rippling rhythms, is moving and memorable." | ||
