James McBey, Etching, "The Phoenician Coast," 1934
James McBey, Scottish, 1883-1959, "The Phoenician Coast," This fine etching titled "The Phoenician Coast" depicts a rocky coast with mast ships in the distance. The image size measures 8 1/5 x 12 3/8 inches with adequate margins. Printed in 1934 in an edition of 80 it is plate signed and dated and also hand signed in pen and ink. McBey's love of the sea and boats is apparent in this landscape of the Syrian coast, near Tyre. Born into poverty he was a self-taught artist only to become the leading figure of the British Etching Revival. His works vary in subject and style but all reveal his masterful draughtsmanship and his sense of light.
