Nora S. Unwin, wood engraving, "Polar Bear"
Nora S. Unwin, British/American, 1907-1982. This framed wood engraving, titled "Polar Bear" is by master wood engraver Nora Unwin. Image size is 3 3/8 x 4 3/8 inches with the total framed size of 12 x 11 inches. It is pencil signed and titled on the lower margin in an edition of 40, and is number 139 in the McGoldrick catalog of Unwin's work. Although we do not have an exact date, McGoldrick lists this image as being created before 1940. Born into the well known Unwin book publishing family in England, Nora showed her artistic talents from an early age and was schooled heavily throughout her early years in numerous creative arts. She studied at the RCA in London before coming to the US in 1946 and is credited with much of the revival of wood engraving in America in the early part of the 20th century. She is represented in major museums and won numerous awards throughout her long career, including the Hamilton-Merrill prize of the American Society of Etchers and Engravers in 1951.
