Auguste Louis Brouet, Etching, "Danseuse au Miroir"
Auguste Louis Brouet, French, "Danseuse Au Miroir," This is a beautiful etching by French artist Auguste Louis Brouet, titled "Danseuse au Miroir" or alternately "La Loge des Danseuses". Image size 6 1/2 x 8 3/4 inches, pencil signed and numbered. According to our research, this image was printed in an edition of 75 but this one is most likely an artist proof, as it is numbered "8/20". Auguste Brouet was born to a poor family in Paris in 1872, and as a teenager worked as an apprentice lithographer and lute maker. He attended the Ecole des Beaux Artes, under the tutelage of Gustave Moreau, and was then introduced to etching by Auguste Delatre. He went on to become one of the most successful original etchers of the early 20th century in France, specializing in scenes of daily life of the working class as well as his remarkable images of dancers. This intimate scene is a great example of Brouet's mastery of etching technique; he uses expressive, yet quite delicate lines, rich contrast and subtle plate tone to create a truly stunning image.
