Benton Spruance, Lithograph, "Spinner Play," 1934

Benton Spruance, American, 1904-1967, "Spinner Play". This dynamic football scene is a very rare original lithograph by American artist Benton Spruance, titled "Spinner Play". The image size is 13 7/8 x 19 1/4 inches, published in 1934 in a small edition of 50, pencil signed, numbered and inscribed, "For Dear Collet with best regards- Spruance". This print has an approximately 2 inch repaired tear in the lower center of the image just above the margin, but it really is barely perceptible. Benton Spruance studied in Paris after winning the coveted Cresson Scholarship in 1928 while attending college at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. He studied with Edmond and Jacques Desjobert in Paris before returning to the US and continuing his nearly forty year career as a printmaker. Although he created many lithographs in his long career his few football scenes are some of the rarest and most sought after of his images.
