Thomas Moran, Etching, "The Rapids Above Niagra" 1886
Thomas Moran, American, 1837-1926, "The Rapids Above Niagra". This is a remarkable etching by Thomas Moran after his oil painting of the same name. The image measures 6 x 7 7/8 inches, 1886, printed on handmade watermarked Sweden paper, possibly an early proof. This print is initialed and numbered in the plate, pencil signed on the lower left margin. It is number 51 in the Klackner catalog, in which it is described as "A study of the great wave, remarkably vivid in effect." Thomas Moran was a leading artist of the American etching revival, and in 1877 was one of the founders of the New York Etching Club. Moran was known for his experimentation in all aspects of the etching process, and his ability to beautifully capture the atmosphere and energy of the American landscape.
