Levon West, Etching, "Early Gunner" 1930

Levon West, American, 1900-1968, "Early Gunner". This etching and drypoint by Levon West, published in 1930, measures 9 3/8 x 15 1/8 inches. It is pencil signed and numbered on the lower margin. Levon West grew up a preacher's son in North Dakota. He attended the University of Minnesota, majoring in business before he turned to art. In a pivotal moment in his life, West traveled to the east coast where he met Joseph Pennell, who recognized his talent and encouraged him to study art and printmaking. West studied etching with Pennell as well as at the Art Students League in New York. He went on to become a very successful artist, and had work in many galleries and museums even in his own lifetime.
