Sears Gallagher, Watercolor, "Surf, Monhegan" c. 1920
Sears Gallagher, American, 1869-1955, "Surf, Monhegan". A brilliant seascape by the renowned artist, Sears Gallagher. Created c. 1920, sight size is 13 1/4 x 19 1/4 inches and is signed by the artist on the lower right. On the back of the sheet, written in the artist hand, is the title and the artists signature. Known for his etchings and watercolors of historic streets and landmarks in and around Boston, he also had a love of marine settings and created many scenes of coastal Maine, especially Monhegan Island. This beautiful example of the crashing surf on a fine day off the coast of Maine portrays Gallagher's ability to bring about the extraordinary natural beauty and power of his surroundings by a few, well placed brush strokes. Gallagher grew up in Boston and began his career as an artist reporter and illustrator but soon began to be widely recognized for his etchings and watercolors. He was an early member of the Monhegan Island Artist Colony. His work has been exhibited in many important public collections throughout the U.S. and Europe.
