Armin Landeck, Engraving, "Rooftop and Skylights" 1969
Armin Landeck, American, "Rooftop and Skylights". This is a fantastic image of the rooftops of New York City by American artist and architect Armin Landeck. Copper engraving, image size 17 3/4 x 20 5/8 inches, published in 1969 in an edition of 100, cat: Kraeft-121, pencil signed. Armin Landeck was born in Wisconsin and graduated with a degree in architecture from Columbia University in 1927, then went on to study art and printmaking at the Art Students League in New York and spent a couple of years traveling through Europe, studying the art and architecture of the landmark European cities. Landeck became quite well known for his etchings and engravings, many featuring the architecture of New York City. Landeck's early work is very representational; in the 1950s, influenced by the Abstract Expressionist movement he developed a unique style of abstraction using geometric lines which accentuate the forms of the architecture as well as light and shadows, as can be seen in this beautifully stylized architectural scene. His work was always well received; he won numerous awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, and his work is represented in many prestigious museums worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art, National Academy of Design, National Gallery of Art, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. This particular image was awarded the Wiggin Memorial Purchase Prize, Boston Printmakers 1969; and the Segerman Purchase Award, Society of American Graphic Artists, 1969.
