Charles Hovey Pepper, Woodblock in Colors, c. 1906
Charles Hovey Pepper, American, 1864-1950, "French Woman in a Cloak at a Doorway". This vibrant color woodcut by Charles Hovey Pepper measures 12 3/8 x 9 inches. Created c. 1906, it is signed in the block as usual and trimmed to the edges. This image is from the artists estate with provenance on the backing. Pepper was born in Waterville, ME, son of Dr. George Pepper, President of Colby College. He studied at the Arts Student League before traveling to Paris and attending the Academie Julian. He opened a studio there, exhibiting at the Salon from 1894-1898. During this time he began to study and collect Japanese woodblock prints and in 1903 he traveled to Japan to continue his studies. The majority of his work is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and Colby College, Waterville, ME.
