Isaac Friedlander, Latvian-American, 1890-1968, "The Messenger". A remarkable original etching by Latvian-American artist Isaac Friedlander, this image measures 13 7/8 x 10 1/4 inches, published in 1953 in a small edition of 30 impressions, pencil signed, titled, and numbered. Friedlander was born in the town of Mitau, Latvia, and as a young man spent several years prison. When he was released he traveled to Italy where he studied art and became friends with fellow expatriate Maxim Gorky. In 1929 Friedlander emigrated to the United States, becoming known for his evocative etchings and wood engravings, many with with a strong political message.
