Arthur J. T. Briscoe, British, 1873-1943, "Bucko Mate". A powerful image of the "Bucko Mate" by the marine artist, Arthur Brisco. It measures 6 7/8 x 11 7/8 inches on laid paper. Published in 1926, it is ink signed and numbered. Cat: Hurst 152, framed. The "bucko mate" was the captains right-hand man who made sure the sailors towed the line. The great trading ships of the late 19th C. and into the early 20th C. were ruled by brute force. Many men met their deaths on these ships because they were driven to their limits and beyond in their quest to get to the California goldfields first.
