This piece of Sumida Gawa pottery is signed by Ryosai and shows a panel of monkeys cavorting around a Japanese lantern. The other side depicts a monkey screaming with delight. The glaze is a thick brown topped with creamy white around the rim. The vase is signed to the base and is in excellent condition. There are no chips, cracks or restoration.

The cups are decorated with brightly enamelled children in various poses arranged just above the base, with fine inflorescences of wisteria draped from the rims. This is a beautiful vase by a rare artist. It is decorated with two large panels showing groups of people in an outdoor scene. This vase is an unusual shape with a somewhat flattened body and a long tapered neck. The body is gilt and enamelled with 4 panels, two of garden scenes and two of women & children. There is a Greek styled key border below the rim with both angular and lobed panels adorning the shoulder.
