Width: 6.5 cm (2.6 in) Height: 15.5 cm (6.1 in) This stunning pair was made by one of the masters of Meiji period Satsuma – Matsumoto Hozan. They each have two beautifully gilt and enamelled panels showing groups of brightly dressed people in outdoor settings The gilt borders between the panels and at the top and bottom of each piece is particularly well done. In addition, a pattern has been made in the white glaze in the bands where it is visible. This is very rare in Satsuma and would have been done when the pots were initially made and glazed – long before the other decoration was added. There is some wear to the gilding on the rim of each pot, but otherwise they are both in excellent condition with no damage and no restoration. Both pots are signed on the base. |
