These extraordinary Sumida Gawa vases have a red ground with leaf-shaped moulding wrapped around the surface. Thick earthy-coloured flambe glaze cascades down from the rims and over branch-like double handles. The decoration is made up of 6 individual characters on each vase in humorous situations, monkeys on one vase and people on the other. On one side of each vase is an underglaze blue handwritten signature plaque of the maker, Ban-ni. Sumida pottery of this type and size is rare. The condition is excellent and considering the fine features of the applied figures, the lack of losses is amazing. There is just one monkey with a small loss to the tips of his fingers.
