Large figure of Liang Hongyu in gilt silver, ivory, and enamel, C 1920. A dramatic representation of the 12th-century woman warrior. She began as a prostitute and rose through the ranks to general. Her legend lives on in this figure: A woman with a raised fist holding a flag and dragging a sword. The armor, scabbard, and headdress are in enamel, filigree, and gilt silver. The oversized hands and face are ivory. Figure mounted on stained wood base with inlaid gold fretwork and exotic ornament. Three minor edge tears to filigree. Otherwise very good condition with bright colors and smooth, unmarred ivory. Dimensions: Height (with base): 24 ½ in. Width: 15 in. Depth: 7 ½ in. Base: Depth: 7 in. |
