Gorham Sterling Silver Punch Bowl w/ Ladle 1881

Sterling silver punchbowl with grape bunches. Made by Gorham in 1881. Bowl has curved sides and rests on dome foot. Hammered honeycomb exterior and gilt interior. Grape bunches and leaves applied to two sides. Mouth has scalloped rim encircled with vine. Fully hallmarked. Tactile and festive.

With original ladle: Grape bunch handle applied to vine stem terminating in ovoid bowl. Ladle bowl interior is gilt and exterior is monogrammed.

A sumptuous piece of Gilded Age silver with a special provenance: The punch bowl was presented to James McMillan from “his fellow directors the of the Detroit, Mackinac, and Marquette” Railroad in 1882. McMillan served as senator from Michigan from 1889 to 1902.
