Victorian sterling silver mug with dog. Made by JCE in London in 1855. Scalloped foot and foliate scroll handle.
Central cartouche depicts a boy embracing a dog. The dog is recumbent, a dead snake between his forepaws. The boy sits on the dog’s back, his legs crossed and arms wrapped around the dog’s neck. A sweet scene in high relief. Details include the boy’s chubby thighs and the dog’s panting tongue. The dog appears to be a retriever.
Other cartouches decorated with flowers and fish scales, and a third is blank for engraving.
Ornate and sentimental - a wonderful piece of Victoriana.
