Hand-hammered tea caddy in sterling silver and mixed metal. Made by Tiffany in New York, ca. 1881. Baluster body and short neck with interior cap and snug-fitting exterior cover. Naturalistic flowers and foliage raised and etched on hammered ground. A banner dated “1856” and “1881” engraved on banner “tied” around gold wedding band. On cover in raised letters is the phrase “Cor unum via una” (translation: One heart, one way). On jar underside in raised letters is the inscription: “GHP July 17th CEP”. Jar and cover interior lightly gilt. The pattern (no. 4824) was first produced in 1877. Excellent condition with rich period patina.
