Hand-hammered sterling silver and mixed metal bowl. Made by Gorham in Providence in 1883. Bowl is round with curved sides and allover honeycomb hammering. Applied mixed metal ornament in form of waddling fowl, darting butterfly, swooping bird, and gnarly, bristly branch. Mounted to rim is apple branch with leaves and fruit. An insect crawls on one leaf. Bowl rests on 3 plain supports.
Fine craftsmanship and inspired Japonesque design. Hallmark includes date letter, no. 1725, and phrase “Sterling & Other Metals”. Very good condition and rich patina.
