This is a very important, museum-quality sterling silver and mixed metal water pitcher, beautifully designed and expertly decorated by Tiffany & Co., America's premier silversmiths, in the Aesthetic style.
Its hand-hammered finish creates a subtle shimmering effect on the surface, cleverly suggestive of gently rippling water and this has been magnificently embellished by the application of an assortment of mixed metal fish all around the body.
These have all been skillfully and meticulously crafted; the scales, fins and facial features of the larger fish being particularly detailed and realistic in appearance.
The fish are all swimming gracefully against an asymmetrical background of pretty chased work depicting reeds and trailing seaweed, beautifully and intricately made with elements of the Japonesque style.
Copper and gold water lily leaves wind sinuously all around the applied silver handle and to the left of the handle, a sumptuously detailed dragonfly in beautiful chased work is perched upon a reed which curves downwards towards the base at the back of the pitcher.
The piece is a veritable feast for the eyes; no matter from which angle it is viewed there is something to engage and delight the eye, the sign of design of the very highest quality.
As would be expected from silversmiths with Tiffanys' fine and well-deserved reputation, the quality of the design has been equalled, and even surpassed, by the exceptional quality of the craftsmanship which is quite exceptional.
The pitcher is in superb condition with a nice soft patina on the silver against which the mixed metal elements stand out in a distinctive and pleasing contrast.
The chased work is all crisply defined and beautifully detailed.
The pitcher is clearly marked on the base with a series of pattern numbers and the words Tiffany & Co., Makers, Sterling Silver and Other Metals..
This magnificent piece would be the piece-de-resistence in any collection and is a true work of art.
It stands approx. 7 1/8" tall and measures 4" in diameter at the base..
