| This regal English George IV period sterling silver entrée dish with original domed cover was made by the premier silversmithing firm of John Bridge. It is fully hallmarked on the platter with maker’s mark for John Bridge, lion passant for sterling, leopard’s head for London, date letter “i” for 1824, and the monarch in profile. The handle and domed cover are appropriately hallmarked as part of the set. The platter and domed cover are of oval form the platter is decorated with an applied gadroon, shell and acanthus leaf border, the cover has a gadrooned section on the lower body and border of the ring form acanthus leaf capped handle. Length of Platter: 16 inches. Length of Cover: 13 Inches. Weight Overall: 93 Troy Ounces. John Bridge was one of the most prolific and talented English silversmiths working during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries in London. He was a partner with his cousin, Philip Rundell, until Rundell’s retirement in 1823. Rundell and Bridge were appointed Royal Goldsmiths to both the courts of George II and George IV. They were known for their neoclassical designs and employed many later Royal Goldsmiths in their firm such as Paul Storr, Benjamin Smith and Digby Scott. | |||||||||||||||
