| Beautiful antique silver tankard totally handmade from the 18th century. Set on 3 figural lion feet. Decorated with leaves and flower heads and also 3 birds embossed around the body of the piece. A figural crest at the base of the handle, see note below. The lid set with a lightly gilded coin with the date 1700. We believe to be in celebration of a wedding in 1734. Engraved names around the coin on the cover. See photos of engraving on top of tankard. Weight 21.42 troy ounces. 6 ½ inches in height. Very good condition. An old yellowed typed letter comes with this piece. As follows This Tankard was bought by L.T. Romaine of C. B. Tedcastle in London in February, 1903. Tedcastle, in turn, had bought the tankard from a collector in Molde, Norway, in July, 1897. Molde is on the coast north of the Ramsdal Fjord, North of Bergen. The collector was a man who travels through Scandinavia picking up curios, in the summer months. The tankard was the best thing he had and he called attention to the Danish crest on the handle saying the Norwegian Vice Consul stated he believed the tankard had been the property of Frederick The Fourth, King of Norway, Denmark and Sweden, and had been looted from the palace in a raid and that the descendants of the looter had sold the tankard to him in order to emigrate. | |||||||||||||||
