Sir James Hope Painting

Large Sir James Hope painting of Yosemite in magnificent 19th century frame. Oil on canvas. Signed lower right. Dimensions: 45" h x 38" w (unframed); 60" h x 53" w (framed). James Hope (1818-1892) was born in Scotland but spent his years as an active painter in Vermont, and later New York. Hope painted images of Yosemite, probably after Bierstadt sketches. He also painted the White Mountains in New Hampshire. Hope saw active duty in the Civil War and later painted battle scenes. He exhibited, among other venues, at the National Academy of Design and the Pennsylvania Academy.
