| Nice pencil sketch by Paul Sample (American, 1896-1974). Drawing features two men in long coats standing on dock. They are looking out toward the water at a boat coming in. Nice shading and ability to capture action. Housed in black frame. Small tear in upper right corer. Unsigned, original owner obtained the sketch directly from the artist. Dimensions: (framed) 13.25" x 18." Paul Sample was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He studied at Dartmouth College. After graduating, he developed tuberculosis and went to the Adirondack Mountains to recover. While recuperating, he nurtured his talent for painting. In 1925 Sample moved to California and was taught by Jonas Lie. The nest year he became part of the Faculty at the University of Southern California. The artist moved to New England in 1938 and became Artist-in-Residence at Dartmouth. He lived in Norwich, Vermont with his family and kept his studio at Dartmouth in Hanover, New Hampshire. He is best known for his landscape, genre, and still life painting. | ||||||
