| Exquisite hand-colored copperplate engraved map from John Speed's "Theatre of the Empire of Great Britain" which was first published in 1611. This map is of the Anglo-Saxon Heptarchy-the ancient division of seven regional kingdoms-"Britain as it was devided in the tyme of the Englishe Saxony." The left border features the earliest Kings starting with Hengist of Kent from AD 456. The right border shows later Kings and illustrate the conversion to Christianity. The Kings are represented with their armorial crests and other signs of their rule. The map itself shows the various Anglo-Saxon kingdoms (each with Coat of Arms). Also included are: an elaborate compass rose and ornamental cartouche with a seven-sceptered crown. This edition was published by Thomas Bassett and Richard Chiswell in 1676 and is one of the most sought after maps of Britain. A wonderful piece, great color, nicely framed. Dimensions: 22" x 27" (framed) John Speed (1552-1629) was one of the most famous map-makers of the 17h century.
