Sally Avery Michel Watercolor

Nice watercolor of bathers at the beach painted in 1987. Watercolor on paper, signed and dated lower right. Child's Gallery label on reverse. Painting features several figure son beach. Bold colors of bathingsuit and towel make nice contrast against muted colors of sand and water. Dimensions: 12" x 16" (unframed); 24.5" x 30.5" (framed). Sally Michel was born in 1902 and studied at the Art Students League in New York City. In 1924 she spent the summer in Gloucester and met artist Milton Avery. The two returned to New York and were married several years later. They worked together closely until Milton's death in 1965. Together they created a sort of "high modernist" painting style. Though Michel painted, she focused on managing Milton's career, rarely exhibiting or selling her own work. She did, however, create illustrations for The New York Times, children's book and other publications. Beginning in the 1950s, she began to finally exhibit her own work.
