This is a rare and splendid 18th century Buffet, typical from Gascony, an area of southwest France that was part of the "Province of Guyenne and Gascony" prior to the French Revolution. The region is vaguely defined and the distinction between Guyenne and Gascony is unclear; sometimes they are considered to overlap, and sometimes Gascony is considered a part of Guyenne. Most definitions put Gascony east and south of Bordeaux. This stunning piece is made from a beautifully patinaed walnut and featured a lovely facade offering an exquisite embellishment. The upper stretcher is accented with an intricately sculpted frieze flanked by a pair of drawers highlighted with sunflower pattern (Typical from this area), upon a pair of arched paneled doors (still with Louis XV influence), separated in their center by another impressive carving, all standing on a scrolled apron boasting a detailed flower-filled urn supported by turned legs on ball feet. Note the 3 quarter fluted columns flanking the piece. Several scratches and dents can be seen here and there due to the age. Circa date 1780. Dimensions 39”high/ 53”wide/ 22”deep.
