Antique Ainu Attusi elm bark robe coat kimono
Approximately 19th century, very rare Ainu Attusi robe woven from elm bark and with cotton applique. Overall condition is fine.

The best Ainu textiles typically display strong, graphic designs created with applique and embroidery. The patterns represented the wearer's inner spirit and guardian spirit. Some of the materials used were made by the Ainu, and some such as cottons, silk and velvets were acquired by trade with the Japanese or from the continent. Many of the best surviving examples were traded from the Ainu to Japanese ship captains, who brought them home as gifts or exotic souvenirs. These pieces were stored in kura or family warehouses, safe from the damaging wear that naturally befell garments worn in a hunting and gathering society. Even so, very few pieces now exist in pristine condition.
