KATO KANZAN DENSCHICHI (1821-1890), one of the leading Kyoto potters. His father, Kato Kobei was a
famous Seto potter. Kanzan opened his kiln in the Kiyomizu district in Kyoto during the 1860s, and was
known to be the first potter to make porcelain in the western taste. He was awarded gold medals in
the world expositions in Paris, Sydney, and Amsterdam. His pieces are rare to find in the marketplace.
